Tyranny of the majority

And another letter.....

REGARDING THE Jan. 26 City & Region news story "Gay marriage opponents rally across state": Those who object to the Supreme Judicial Court's decision to allow gay marriage analogize it to Roe v. Wade. In terms of context, a better analogy is Brown v. Board of Education.

In both cases, a majority aimed to disenfranchise and marginalize a group for the sake of preserving a way of life, believing so strongly in the goal that argument was futile.

In both, faith was used to push an oppressive ideal -- homophobia and segregation. And in both, the courts saw radical change as the only way to serve their assigned role in American democratic society -- that is, to protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority.
