The Passion of the Christ
I just got home a bit ago from watching Mel Gibson's new movie, The Passion of the Christ. It was powerful and a lot of people were very moved by it. Many people cried and seemed stunned. I didn't know what to say after the movie. It was to me 2 hours of torture, humiliation, and finally, death. It was brutal, as I expected it would be. For the people who were so shocked, I don't know what they thought a crucifixion was. Perhaps it was just seeing it so graphically that it got to them.
To me, I see people do much of what was in the movie to each other. I see the worse in mankind at times, and I wonder how much longer we will be around. I look at the current controversy surrounding gay marriage, and I wonder if I'm the only one who hears the venomous dialogue directed at our community from homophobic religious freaks. Some of it is absolutely horrible. Many of them are the same kind of people who put Jesus on the cross. Scary.
I was working on a photo album on Friday night. I didn't put anything into it, but I left it wide open. It was set to the default setting when it was created and I failed to change it. I came home and found that some had uploaded some porn pictures to it. It's amazing to me that people could find it and upload to it in such a short period of time. Unbelievable.

I've given this a LOT of thought since I viewed the movie. I would go into it here, but I've decided to make a post about it because I think it does strike on larger issues, beyond this particular movie.
In short, I now wish that I had not gone to the movie. Part of it is that I see no point in subjecting myself to two hours of watching a person being slowlyl beaten to death. Part of it is the weird people who were around me; I could hear some crying, others praying. Part of it is that by being there I was catering to the same people who want to drive my community into the ground, and I feel awful about that. And finally, I always assumed that Hollywood dollars wouldn't really end up in the hands of those who would harm our cause (we are told all the time that Hollywood is for liberal causes). I know that is naive. The fact is, we have no idea really where all that money goes, or what Mr. Gibson is spending his portion on.
In terms of the actors, Jim Caviezel (played Jesus), is known to be a "devout Catholic", so we know where some of his money will go, and we are supporting him by watching this movie. So, in an indirect way, we are supporting the Catholic Church and we all know how they feel about us. Remember, we are "intrinsically evil" according to the Pope.
I appologize to my community and, I will make it up to them (a suggestion will be followed up in my post later today). And thanks Dan, for making me think about this! :-)
I was pretty much forced to go see this movie since my dad is a pastor and he invited the whole church to see it "and bring an unsaved friend!".. i thought it was ok for a movie.. but it didn't move me or "touch me" really.. it's a rental in my opinion.
Oh and Bill I saw that open photo album with the porn in it. I tried to erase it for you but couldn't so instead of having all the porn in one folder i split it up as a 1x1 folder so it wouldn't show ALL at least haha. I dont know who posted it but I did tried to get rid of it for ya!
Bill,
Why in the world did you even want to go see this movie?! It is a free country and you can do as you wish, but didn't you know that "homophobic religious freaks" are creaming themselves over this movie? I read a lot of conservative religious blogs and this is all they are talking about. Personally, I would have used the money for a better cause.
