I suppose it's easy to forget and take for granted what you already have.
But, there are many people in this country who do feel that we have too many freedoms. They want the freedom to speak your mind, as long as it agrees with them. We are turning more and more into a religious state, right before our eyes. The Constitution was created to protect our nation from exactly what some of these nut cases are trying to do to our country.
In time, I believe many of the 11 state constitutional amendments will be challenged and will fall.
What I think is truly ironic is Cincinnati, Ohio. In the early 1990's, Cincinnati passed a city ordinance that basically prevented the enactment of any laws that would protect gay citizens of the city, such as protection against being fired for being gay, fair housing for gays, etc. The city, over the last decade has lost hundreds of millions of dollars in lost convention revenues because of this law.
Last Tuesday, Cincinnati rescinded it's law. The irony is that the state of Ohio passed the most restrictive marriage amendment in the land, outlawing not only marriage for gay couples, but also any type of civil union. It went even further saying that any arrangements that simulated a marriage-type arrangement or contract would be voided as well.
Amen to that. When you have polls showing that a majority of Americans think there is "too much" freedom of the press it's a scary thing.
Truly, if we put our basic freedoms up for a vote the morons in this country would do away with them post haste.
Don't these people get the basic concept that the reason we have a Constitution is because the founders knew that basic freedoms could not be "voted for" or made the "issue of the day"?
