The Safari
It’s been a busy day for us. Yesterday, we went to the San Diego Zoo, which was really very impressive. Then we went to a great Mexican restaurant last night.
Today, we took a safari at a wildlife preserve north of San Diego. I'll write more about all of it when I’m not so tired. Kent took this photo today as the giraffes tried to gang up on me to get the treats I had. They are such gentle animals.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I hope you all have a great holiday season.
And Jeff, you are right about nature. There were a few indiscretions at the park by the animals in full view of all the kids. In nature, "these things happen and some of those animals or just plain kinky by any standard. ;)
And for those of you who asked, no, that is not a Copenhagen can in my shirt pocket. It's a lens cap. :-)
Hey, guys--it looks and sounds like fun. Have a great Christmas and a happy healthy 2005!
Excellent picture!!! Last time I went to the Zoo, was London Zoo around 1992, and it was horrid - three or four giraffes, including one baby attempting to much on the most dilapidated old manky tree that you'd ever seen...
So - I didn't stay all day...
Great picture. I loved visiting San Diego with my family (10+ years ago now). Generally I'm not a fan of zoos either, but I thought the wildlife park was more spacious and natural-seeming than most. I wouldn't mind some of that weather right about now. :)
To be honest, I don’t like zoos. I imagine they have their good points, but whenever I go to one, the animals look bored out of their skulls. However, I do have a cute story to tell about giraffes I saw in a zoo.
Some time ago my wife and I took my stepson to the zoo in Santa Barbara. There is a giraffe there who is somewhat of a local celebrity. She has a severely crooked neck, (something I can sympathize with,) but other than looking a bit odd, she doesn’t seem to be in any distress or pain.
She is in a pen with a couple of other male giraffes, and the day we went there were several families with their young children at the pen enjoying the afternoon and watching the giraffes romp and play.
The giraffe with the crooked neck had just come from the drinking pool they have in the pen, and she started walking along the far fence when she began to pee. Just behind her was one of the males, and he quickly bent down, and got himself a drink as she relieved herself.
It was one of the funniest damn things I have ever seen. I remember hearing a collective gasp from the crowd as many of the parents quickly shielded their children’s eyes from nature in all her glory.
Like I said, I thought it was hilarious, but that’s just me. The Reader’s Digest, on the other hand, didn’t think it was funny at all.
