Letter: Gay debate distracts from other issues
I don’t drink; therefore, I think we should have a law that no one be allowed to drink.
Because I walk with a cane, I say we need a law saying everyone should walk with some type of aid.
I love cats; I am not fond of dogs. Let’s make owning a dog illegal.
I really dislike bossy, opinionated people. Let’s make them illegal also.
Oh, I hear you say, I’m following the Bible. Okay, let’s stone all those who do not observe the Sabbath, as it says in the Bible. Let us sell our daughters into slavery, as it says in the Bible. Let us allow our daughters to lay with their fathers in order to have children, as Lot did with his two daughters, as it says in the Bible. Oh, that’s the Old Testament, you say? Well then, let’s go the route of the disciples who said it is better to not marry at all. That should take care of the population problem.
Seems to me, there are a lot of things that are allowed or disallowed because it is in the Bible. Perhaps we are reading the Bible wrong? Perhaps we are not reading the true message? Perhaps we are putting a newer, modern twist on the readings we do? Perhaps we need to remember that not all people follow the Christian faith, but are still good people.
The message in the Bible is one of love - of your partner, of your family, of your fellow man. Why is it that the Bible has instead been used to preach hate, family separation, segregation and racism?
I have many gay friends. Quite a few of them have been with their partners longer than many of my so-called straight friends. Being a homosexual couple means hard work to keep that partnership together. It means letting small things go, and talking over big things. It seems to be very easy to be straight, married, and when something small pops up, there goes the divorce rates again. Yet that seems to be totally accepted, just a fact of life.
Gay people are just that, people. What someone does in the privacy of their bedroom is their business, not ours. I have seen many heterosexual couples holding hands, hugging, even kissing out in public. I don’t think it’s necessary to do this in public, never mind if you are straight or gay, yet I don’t hear objections to this. I see young people wearing clothing that might as well not be on, so much flesh is exposed, yet no one seems to mind this.
There are so many more issues we could be working on: hunger, homelessness, the violence in our own neighborhoods, children with no parents, drugs. So much more important than this issue.
Let up on the issues of gay rights. It is a non-issue.

Well, the easy answer is that people will do anything for personal gain - they are very self-serving.
Take the politicians, for example. There is a reason that they were trying to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage. They wanted to garner votes. They pissed off the gay citizens of this country. But you know what, it didn't matter because, as a minority, they know that we disposable minority.
Take the President, for example. He was the one who endorsed the same amendment. Is he not my President also? Yet, I am nothing but crap to him.
Why are we a disposable minority? Because, most people, if they are totally honest about it, are homophobic and hate gays. I truly believe that. And these people call themselves "Christians". THAT is why the politicians went after the gay marriage issue. They had nothing to lose from doing that.
AND, it was done on PURELY RELIGIOUS GROUNDS! That is why I'm getting fed up with religion (and 99.9% of Christians) altogether. I'm getting sick and tired of being told that my family is crap, when those same people are very willing to take the other list of "sins" that they are guilty of day in and day out, and ignore them.
Until this nation starts respecting ALL of it's citizens, it will not stand for freedom or democracy. PERIOD.
"The message in the Bible is one of love - of your partner, of your family, of your fellow man. Why is it that the Bible has instead been used to preach hate, family separation, segregation and racism?"
You hit the nail right on the head with this one Bill. Why oh why can't everyone get along in this world? Because then it would be too easy, and there wouldn't be war or strife. In the end people have many interpretations of the Bible, good and bad.
