Lewis Under House Arrest

I’ve been following this for awhile now. I looks as if Lewis will not be put to sleep. We was placed under permanent house arrest since he was attacking the neighbors. Also, he apparently attacked the Avon lady (I probably would have also - I don’t like Avon).

I can’t believe they put Lewis on Prozac.

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (AP) -- A Connecticut judge on Tuesday spared the life of alleged serial-scratcher Lewis the cat, whom even Prozac could not tame, but ordered that the felonious feline remain inside his owner’s home at all times.

“There are no exceptions. None,” said Judge Patrick Carroll, who also granted accelerated rehabilitation to Lewis’ owner, Ruth Cisero of Fairfield, Connecticut.

That means her record will be expunged if she successfully completes two years of probation.

Cisero had faced a charge of reckless endangerment. Neighbors complained that the cat’s long claws and stealth have allowed it to attack at least a half-dozen people and ambush the Avon cosmetics lady as she got out of her car on her neighborhood rounds. (source)

The thing I love most about cats is their unwillingness to compromise - that and the fact that they see the world in absolutes and never changing. But above all, if they befriend you and choose you, you have their undieing loyalty. There is a beauty and a purity to that. And, my cats are very very affectionate and think that I am IT and can do nothing wrong.

Of course, they were abandoned - left to die as 4 week old kittens left in a paper bag in the middle of the road to be ran over. As luck would have it, they found me, and they are now properly spoiled rotten.

Of course, I realize that if I introduced a new element into their world, all of that could change. I don't think they would be receptive to my adopting a child for example. The love to be the center of it all.

Many years ago, my brother and his ex-wife found a beautiful Persian wandering the streets. He was skinny and filthy -- obviously he'd been without a home for a long time. They named him Swenson, cleaned him up, and soon he was a pampered and much loved house cat.

They had Swenson for a couple of years without a problem. Then, my nephew was born.

As soon as the baby entered the house, Swenson went insane. His personality changed from sweet and easy-going to homocidal. He was moody, mean, and lashed out by hissing, scratching, and biting.

The final straw was when Swenson attacked my brother while he slept on the sofa. The cat jumped on my brother's head and viciously bit his nose. He had to have several stitches and his face was covered with deep claw marks.

After that, they knew they couldn't keep Swenson in the same house as a baby. No one they knew would take him after such a horrible attack. So, they took him to the animal shelter where he was adopted quickly by a couple with no children.

We have an attack cat, who hates everyone except our little family, whom she loves, cuddles with and purrs for. This will horrify you, Bill, but we eventually had to declaw her - the alternative was to stop hosting our 13-year-old son's friends at our house. This has, however, not changed Laura the Cat's attitude - she can still hiss anyone into submission, including 13-year old boys.
