Back to College
If you are sending your kid to a college or university, or starting to look around at which school may be more tolerant to minority students, here’s a list to get you started. If you have a gay or lesbian child, I’m sure you know that some schools are much more accepting than others. If you want your child to go to a school that is about diversity and embraces it, this list may be of help to you.
The list is composed, in part, from input from students who have attended these schools.

I'm very surprised to see that University of California--San Diego did not appear on any of those lists. UCSD just completed the largest LGBT resource center in the nation and have several well known LGBT-identified faculty holding some very high positions in upper administration. Very, very friendly campus.
Bill,
There was a report on my local news today with a much different list.
Check out all the California univeristies!

There is an interesting article on this posted in Boston.com today.
I went to Cal State Long Beach. It was a very accepting school even 25 years ago when I attended. I imagine that most of the Cal State universities still are -- very diverse, enforced protections.
Going to school in California is probably a good choice for many LGBT students. I'm surprised that there aren't several California universities on the list. They probably didn't take into account the tolerance in the surrounding community. That's important for LGBT kids who plan to work and live off campus.
Also, most of the schools listed are expensive private universities. Those schools are often out of reach for LGBT kids who don't get financial support from their parents. They would be more likely to enroll in a state college or university. (Since the figures are from the Princton Review you can expect academic elitism to be reflected in the choice of schools I suppose.)
Some may not think it's important to go to a college that is accepting in terms of treatment as well as policy. But I had an experience in college when a professor basically said that she would have flunked me out of a class because I'm gay. (she didn't think gays should be teachers) But she noted that the University had a non-discrimination policy that included sexual orientation, and she would give me the grade that I earned. (an A)
