Gay Persecution is "Laughable"
In addition, her projection that the black struggle and the gay struggle are similar is laughable. The persecution of gays in the USA has never been as violent or as long-standing as the black struggle. Prejudice against gays and lesbians is real, but most of them struggle because of personal choices and preferences. (source)
The persecution of gays in the USA has never been as violent or as long-standing as the black struggle?
Have you never heard of Matthew Shepard? There are many Matthew Shepards in this country and around the world. Gays are murdered every single day, and this has been happening since before slavery took place in this country. The ignorance is astonishing.
But I am glad that you pointed out to us that our struggle is because we choose to be open about what we are. We are killed and beaten because we dare to have the courage to confront hate and live honest, open lives.
Honesty and integrity are the the only qualities that can truly fight prejudice. That prejudice is not found with the thugs who beat and kill queers. The prejudice you claim to know so much about is rooted in the belief that queers choose to be queer, that they choose to dare love who they desire and therefore, the queers deserve the treatment they get. That is the source of the prejudice that gay bashers feed on, and it all starts with people like you, Bishop Harry Jackson.
If you really want to fight prejudice, you might start looking at yourself.

Wow Dave!! A very powerful letter. I hope he really thinks about it. I've always found it a bit odd that, given what African Americans went through at the hands of slave owners and other bigoted people, that some of them are absolutely unable to fathom what a struggle for equal rights means.
I guess it's easy to look at others and point the finger when you are no longer oppressed as much? I never understood the reasoning.
You see, I know myself, and I know that if women didn't have the right to vote, or black children were denied enrollment to an "all white" school, I'd be right there protesting the injustice of it, even though I had those rights.
Why? It's quite simple...
None of us are free unless all of us are free! Freedom can not exist at the expense of someone else.
I had to respond to this jerk. I know it will have no effect, but SO WHAT .... I sent the 'bishop' the following email :
Mr. Jackson,
I was appalled at your misguided attack on gay people. First, by stating "most of them struggle because of personal choices". Such ignorance - being gay is no more a personal choice than your race. If you cannot at least take the small amount of time required to learn the facts, could you at least stop shouting your ignorance from the rooftops?
Then, to throw in "The staggering number of out-of-wedlock births and abortions" has absolutely nothing to do with gay people, or their rights to have a legal partnership. Just because heterosexuals have little apparent regard for family values and children, how is it you feel justified in mentioning these failures to attack equal rights for gay people?
I've heard this all again and again ... when someone starts bashing black people with the phrase "I'm no racist, but ...." you can bet your bottom dollar they are racist. And when I hear someone say "I'm not gay bashing, but...." I know EXACTLY what to expect. You did not disappoint my expectations, you are a gay bashing bigot. And to top it off with such callous remarks as to call a struggle for equality "laughable", well, you sound just like a "good 'ol boy redneck" sheriff of 50 years ago.
If I truly felt that you spoke for black America, I would never again donate to the UNCF. Fortunately, I know better. You are just a small minded bigot presuming to speak for black America. I truly thank God you don't speak for anyone but yourself and an ever shrinking cadre of bigots who can't be bothered to take the time to learn the truth.
