If I have to give up my life for my country, I don't want to do it for some fool who did everything in his (or his Daddy's) power to avoid fighting in a war.

So, my view of Don't Ask, Don't Tell has changed a bit. This is what I think:

1) Gay/Lesbian/Bi/Trans people who are talking to a military recruiter SHOULD TELL what they are. Let the military know how many people who they are turning away. Until our community is willing NOT TO LIE about what we are, we deserve discharge under Don't Ask, Don't Tell, because you are supposed to be truthful. It's time for the military to understand that if you have to lie, against regulations, just to get in, you have compromised a lot - you have compromised your integrity. Would you want someone like that guarding your back on the battlefield?

2) If they want us out of the military so bad, fine. Let them go to war and die for us.

3) ALL of the commanders I have talked to in Iraq (30+ and counting) know there are gay soldiers in their ranks AND THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE. I ask them how they are doing. The answer if most always something to the effect that "they are good soldiers", or, "good fighters". In Iraq, no one cares that there are gay soldiers amongst them, and that's the way it should be. This is also no secret. There are openly gay soldiers all over the place, so Don't Ask, Don't Tell is NOT being enforced in Iraq. The problem is, when those soldiers are no longer needed, they will be discharged under Don't Ask, Don't Tell. So much for the theory that having openly gay people in the military "harms unit cohesion."

4) We should have a draft. That way, we all pay for this war. Today in America, 99.9% of us have not paid a price for the stupidity of our current President. It's poor kids who feel this is their only future, who volunteer to fight. Meanwhile, people with means, or with political connections will do anything in their power to keep their kids out of the military. If there was a draft, this war would be resolved, as far as the United States is concerned, within a month.

Frankly, I'm just as happy they don't want us. Do YOU want to go fight in Bush's follies around the world? I sure don't.
